De novo lipogenesis (DNL) is recognised as potentially contributory to pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and could be a factor in the progression of simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, although it contributes a relatively minor amount of whole body fat compared to dietary lipid.
